Blu Girls absorb third loss

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Blu Girls skidded to their third straight loss in the playoffs of the Canada Cup International Softball Championship, suffering a 6-8 defeat to Puerto Rico Friday in Surrey, Canada.

The Filipinas led through four completed innings, 4-3,  but surrendered five runs in the next three frames to dampen their bid for a rebound from Thursday’s back-to-back setbacks to Mexico and Venezuela.

Puerto Rico made its big move in the top of the fifth, unloading three runs off four hits with Carsyn Gordon driving in two with her double and Morganne Flores adding an RBI single, for a  6-4 advantage.

Monica Santos made it 7-4 when she sent in Maria Suarez with a double in the sixth then Flores homered to double Puerto Rico’s lead in top seventh.

Phl IX scored two runs on two-out RBI singles by Reese Guevarra and Francesca Altomonte but the rally was extinguished  as Puerto secured the third and final out in Danie Gilmore.

The Blu Girls outhit Puerto Rico, 14 against 13, but failed to pounce on it.
