Begu & Goerges to battle for Bucharest crown

BUCHAREST, Romania – Irina-Camelia Begu and Julia Goerges are set to square off for the BRD Bucharest Open title after battling past Carla Suárez Navarro and Ana Bogdan, respectively, for a spot in the final.

With countrywoman Simona Halep winning the title last year, No.7 seed Begu looks to become the second straight Romanian to keep the Bucharest crown at home.

She had her work cut out for her in the form of a determined Suárez Navarro, the No.2 seed, edging past her 7-5, 7-5.

“It was a really hot day, but I think it was the same for both of us,” Begu said of the conditions. “We were struggling, but in the end, I was really happy to win in two sets.

“I think it’s not easy for the people in the crowd to stay in such a hot day. On the court, when you move, it is totally different, but for them, just to stay when the sun is burning it is difficult. I have to thank them and I hope they will come and support us again.”

After narrowly grabbing the tight opening set – weathering six breaks of serve to get the decisive lead – she found herself struggling to serve out the match, but completed the straight sets win after just over two hours.

“It’s true I had four match points,” she said. “But she was serving, so I had to fight for every point. In the end I made it and I’m happy that I am in the final.”

Standing between Begu and her first title of 2017 is No.3 seed Julia Goerges, who came back from a set down to defeat Romania’s Ana Bogdan 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Goerges dodged the stifling conditions by playing at a later time, but Bodgan made sure to keep the heat on the German.

"I think it was better to play the second match as it wasn't that hot anymore,” Goerges explained. “It was a very tough battle and I'm glad that I got through that and can play another final.

“I'm very glad that I won a lot of matches here now and especially since my first match wasn't really good, but you always get through it and if you're getting through these matches, you never know what's gonna happen after.”

Up next, Goerges will take on Begu – their head-to-head record is tied at 1-1, but their last meeting came in 2014.

“I know Irina quite well, and it's gonna be a big battle tomorrow,” she said. We both had some good matches here and she beat some good players, and she is a good player too.

“I'm just looking forward to it, it's a final and you have to give everything you have with your body and with your mind and the better one should win tomorrow but hopefully it's going to be me."
