Alyssa calls for respect, support amid national team issues

MANILA, Philippines – The issues swirling around the national women's volleyball team are to be expected, given the amount of attention focused on the high-profile squad.

This, according to star spiker Alyssa Valdez, who found herself embroiled in controversy anew on Sunday evening, even as she led the Creamline Cool Smashers to their third straight win in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Open Conference.

"Definitely, there are going to be a lot of things going on, kasi all eyes are on the volleyball team," said Valdez, who had 23 points in a 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 25-12 win over Philippine Air Force.

"Much is expected from us din… So ganoon talaga, but we really have to close the circle para mas maganda 'yung communication namin. I think that's one key," she added.

While Valdez was playing in the PVL, her teammate in the national team, Abigail Maraño, was unleashing a rant on Twitter. The former De La Salle University captain addressed a number of issues, including the attendance woes that hounded their training sessions.

There have been several reports that the women's national team's training sessions have been plagued with low attendance. Allegedly, there are times when Valdez would show up only to be informed that practice was cancelled for that day.
