Aces play Road Warriors as Govs’ Cup gets underway

IF NLEX struggled in the past three conferences, the same may no longer be true this conference.

Ask Alaska coach Alex Compton.

Head coaches Alex Compton (Alaska) and Yeng Guiao (NLEX)
“NLEX is now looking like a real Yeng Guiao team,” Compton told People’s Journal on the eve of PBA Governors’ Cup opening day yesterday.

Besides the fact that Alaska was one of only two teams the Road Warriors defeated in the last Commissioner’s Cup, Compton also has some details why he considers the Road Warriors a team to watch in the season-ending conference.

For one, Compton noted the NLEX acquisition composed of Alex Mallari, JR Quiñahan and Larry Fonacier who, he said, are all productive players who make NLEX more formidable now offensively.

“They (Road Warriors) acquired starters from other teams who I think will be really significant players for them for a while: Mallari, Quiñahan, and Fonacier,” stressed Compton.
“They also added big time post scorer in Rabeh (Al-Hussaini), Jonas Villanueva is back, and they have a workhorse for an import,” added Compton.

He was referring to Aaron Fuller, an undersized power forward out of University of Southern California who will be the Road Warriors’ reinforcement as they seek redemption after series of forgettable stints in the recent conferences.
