SMB's 'amazing' Heruela lauded for quality minutes in Game 3

MANILA, Philippines – There is no doubt that San Miguel Beer's strength lies in its superb starting unit, a core that has won four championships in the past nine conferences in the PBA – including a "three-peat" in the All-Filipino Cup.

Recently, however, their bench has also come into their own. Arwind Santos, a usual starter, obviously comes off the bench during import conferences, but coach Leo Austria has also given their other reserves more game time than usual.

In Game 1 of the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals against the TNT KaTropa, it was Yancy de Ocampo who got the call, and the veteran center scored six points in 10 minutes. In Game 2 – a blowout win for SMB – even little used rookie Arnold Van Opstal got his minutes.

In Game 3, it was reserve guard Brian Heruela's turn to step up. With Chris Ross needing to cool his heels – and his head – after committing a flagrant foul, the stocky guard from the University of Cebu was thrown into the fire, tasked not only to run the show for SMB but also to guard TNT star Jayson Castro.

"He was amazing, man," Ross said of Heruela after the game. "Last game, he was amazing, and this game, he was amazing."

"When I got the flagrant, he came in, and we didn't miss a beat," he added.
