McGregor targeting Nurmagomedov next

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor is busy preparing for Floyd Mayweather Jr. but it seems that the Irishman is already looking beyond the August fantasy boxing match.

UFC president Dana White said he would pay Floyd Mayweather and mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor $25mn apiece and a cut of pay-per-view proceeds to fight

According to UFC President Dana White via MMA Junkie, “The Notorious” wants to face undefeated Russian mixed martial arts fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov in Russia.

Win or lose, White believes that next on McGregor’s agenda is defending his title. There was no mention of an official fight date though a McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov could happen once the undefeated Russian’s tiff with Tony Ferguson pushes through.

Nurmagomedov and Ferguson are supposed to face off for the interim lightweight title. The match ahs been called off on three different occasions, the last of which was supposed to be at UFC 209 last March.

“Those guys (have) got to fight,” White said. “It would have seemed a lot worse if those two guys fought (at UFC 209), and they were all sitting around waiting. It didn’t happen. That fight still needs to happen. So this thing could time out perfectly.”

Nurmagomedov holds a 24-0 MMA record and is 8-0 in the UFC. McGregor called Nurmagomedov a “pullout merchant” in the past but the latest update from White may have changed the script for the brash-talking Irishman moving forward.
