Fil-German Christian Standhardinger ready to go to work for Gilas

MANILA, Philippines — Fresh off a long flight from Germany, Fil-German big man Christian Standhardinger went to work immediately as he practiced with the men's national basketball team on Wednesday at Meralco Gym.

The 27-year-old forward, who arrived in Manila late Tuesday night, was quite happy on his first day with Gilas Pilipinas, noting that there were "many nice characters and great people" on the team.

"I'm excited to be here," said Standhardinger, who was named to the 12-man lineup that will represent the Philippines in the Southeast Asian Games in August.

A 6-foot-8 big whose Filipino roots can be traced back to Angono, Rizal through his mother, Standhardinger is relishing the opportunity to play for flag and country for the first time.

"I think it's a great opportunity for me to make my family here in the Philippines proud," he said. "That's why I decided to come here and give my best."

Standhardinger played collegiate basketball in Nebraska and Hawaii, then returned to Germany in 2014 to play professionally.
