Dynamic Davis completes delayed victory over Radwanska

EASTBOURNE, Great Britain - Lauren Davis made short work of reaching the third round at Eastbourne on Thursday morning, beating eighth seed Agnieszka Radwanska 7-6, 6-1.

Returning after bad weather forced a halt to proceedings after nine games on Wednesday, with Davis leading 5-4, it was Radwanska who emerged the stronger.

The American beats the eighth seed in straight sets to reach the third round of Aegon International at Eastbourne.
The Pole broke Davis to level at 5-5, taking her third break point with a fine forehand. That break was the sixth in the 10 games of the match and, after both players held to force a tiebreak, further minibreaks dictated the decider. This time it was the American who prevailed, surging to a comprehensive 7-1 success to clinch the first set.

Radwanska, champion here in 2008 and finalist two years ago but yet to win a tournament in 2017, needed a strong comeback to remain in contention but had no answer to Davis, who took the first of three break points to take a 2-0 lead.

The 23-year-old, who won her first WTA career singles title in Auckland earlier this year, was dominant thereafter, wrapping up a fourth successive game to take a 3-0 lead.

Radwanska finally registered in the second set, holding to bring it back to 3-1, but Davis did not lose focus, a double fault costing Radwanska her next service game before going down 6-1 in the second set.

Davis, the World No.29, had lost in qualifying, to the Italian Francesca Schiavone, but earned a reprieve as a lucky loser and is now one match away from matching her quarterfinal of 2014.

She returns to court later on Thursday for her third-round match, taking on the Czech, Barbora Strycova, who has already knocked out Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza.
